Yesterday was a first… I finally complained about a clerk at Sunfresh.  Anyone who lives in the Westport area of KCMO knows how bad some of those Sunfresh checkers are.  Clerks there have been on cell phones or completely ignored me while they checked out my groceries more times than I can count. But I’m pretty laid back, so I’ve never complained… until yesterday.

The checker made a mistake… no big deal really… but then she proceeded to yell at me and say it was my fault.  And she was shaking her finger at me and doing the “oh no you didn’t” neck move. I almost told her to take the bottle of wine I was buying and shove it up her ass.  But I didn’t, mostly because I really needed a drink after dealing with her.  Instead I found her manager and told him about it.

I hate complaining about anyone because I know they could just be having a bad day.  But that Sunfresh clerk yelling at me for her mistake? Oh no she didn’t.

I thougth that the neck and finger move was developed on the jerry springer show and not used in real life

    That’s why I love self-checkout.

  3. Eric says:

Sadly self-checkout still requires employee intervention if you buy booze.

There should be a blog called “Sunfresh Stories”. I HATE going there. I got into an argument with one of the checkers there over the price of grapefruits. She said “no, you’re wrong, these are the 4355s, not the 4212s.” You got me, i’m wrong. Call my mother & tell her she did a horrible job raising me.

This is the Sunfresh in Westport right? There’s a reason we call it the Getto-fresh. That’s also the one where Keri Oke walked to in the middle of the night.

I love that store, but the employees leave alot to be desired. I always use self check out, but I guess thats no good when you are buying the goofy juice. You did the right thing, I’d have just said something about her mother having a wooden leg with a kickstand and left her holding the bag.

Yeah, shop the burbs, dine and drink in the city. It’s a sad story really. You might try the HyVee at 75th and State Line.

I might suggest the Price Chopper in Roeland Park. It isn’t too far from the Sunfresh, and it has a Mexican dairy counter and a tortillaria. Better produce too.

On the other hand, some of my best entertainment comes from the Sunfresh. It’s all about tradeoffs.

Been by that Sunfresh but never inside.

The one out by me went out of business, but was known for being slow and simple. No Springeresque moments, but I never would have gone in there if I was in a hurry. The clerks liked to double and triple check that what they scanned was what rang up. And they would often ask the dreaded “is that good, really?”.

    Oh, and HyVee rocks Keith!

Meesha — the head and neck move are still popular, probably because people still watch Springer.

Average Jane — I’m a big fan of self-checkout, except with alcohol because I still need cashier like Eric said.

Lucas — Sunfresh is not my favorite either, but it’s almost necessary if you just want to pick up a few things and not drive far. I like the Sunfresh stories idea… I think we all have a few stories to share : )

Keith — I like the HyVee at 75 and State Line, but it’s a little out of the way. But they’re open 24 hours which is a bonus.

Jim — Good idea on the Price Chopper… I always forget about that place. But I agree with you about the entertainment value… Dangerboy ran into TKC there one night buying Dr. Pepper and Little Debbie snack cakes.

Nuke — You don’t want to go inside. Trust me.

Might try the Price Chopper in Brookside, not bad, all the snooties go to the “Brookside Market”. Owned by same people that have Price Chopper and buy from the same supplier, yet prices are different???? That kinda bugged me, kinda like going to Sam’s Club and seeing the same stuff as Wal-Mart but actually more expensive than Wal-Mart????? So now I just stick to Costco and Target… Fuck the Walton’s … and Kroenke’s, and Laurie’s, etc that whole Ozark, hillbilly retail mafia.

    But I digress.

I always seem to gain a couple of pounds when I go to the Price Chopper in Roeland Park, and I blame the tortillaria. I always have to buy twice what I need because I usually eat half a bag of those delicious, flat, white cakes just on the drive home. But the already seasoned and blended(peppers, onions, etc) fajita meat (chicken, preferably) is great when you’re feeling a little lazy come dinnertime.

Every time I visit the UnFresh I find myself muttering “I hate this goddamn store,” but it’s just such a hike to anyplace else for a few items (Night of the Living AppleMarket on Broadway is never an option). I’m really looking forward to the downtown market. I will miss seeing Creepy Eastern European Guy and Really Bad Wig Lady at the checkout though.

  13. michelle says:

AKCB – Unfresh… love it! I’m calling it that from now on. And the Apple Market is horrible, as is the grocery store on Main just off of Westport Road.

Awesome to find another blogger in my neck of the woods! I’m not in KC though, but Leavenworth (army and prisons, what a fun loving people). I’ve put you in my reader. :)

I could find a reason to complain to the manager every single time I’m in that damn store. Well minus the times I went in there as a teenager tripping acid, totally beside the point though.

  17. joeybear says:

Thank God that I am not the only person who hates that store. I used to think it was just me…I live up north now, but when I lived in midtown I only went there in a dire emergency. I actually caught one of the sackers stealing half of my purchase, then deny it to the manager who proceeded to tell me that I must be mistaken. Quality service.
