Coca-Cola is my crack. Seriously, it is the nectar of the gods. I stopped drinking it for over a year, and then I drank one can and I was hooked again. Anyway, I was at the cafeteria at work the other day and found a flyer that said a 12 ounce Coke has 10 teaspoons of sugar. Cripes! Apparently I’ve been in denial about how bad it is for me.
A post at HealthBolt explains what happens in your body after you drink a Coke. My favorite part:
Within 45 minutes, “Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works.”
And here I thought I was being good when I went to the bar and just ordered a Coke. Screw that. From now on, I’m hitting the liquor.
I suggest Diet Coke with Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum.

Oh no, it’s worse than that. It’s 10 tsp of high fructose corn syrup! HFCS is the devil!
I’ve been weaning myself off of diet soda too, even that is no picnic.
Syder – I don’t like the taste of Diet Coke. If I can’t have the real thing, I’d rather not drink any at all.
A few years ago the first part of my diet plan was to stop drinking all pop/soda/whatever. Two weeks later (and onlu just starting my swimming regimen) I had lost 9 pounds. BUT, and this is true when kicking any addiction, I still got the craving from time to time (usually about 4 swallows of a McDonald’s Coke cleared me up).
Now? Well now a friend got me addicted to that orange MT Dew they call Livewire. I’m down to a bottle or two a week and am quitting totally in Jan, or so I fucking hope!
I’m with Keith, HFCS is the devil and its in so much of our food that its got no business being in. My mom’s after me to quit the diet soda habit, but I do love it so.
You’re not putting enough Rum in the diet coke!

I can completely sympathize. I have what I like to think of as a managed Dr Pepper habit. I’m allowed to drink two a week. It’s worked well for me.
P.S. If you fear the HFCS, I recommend checking out the ingredient lists on bread at your local grocery store. Truly frightening.
Above and beyond the sugar content, citric acid is a major contaminant in the Coke. Coke will clean corrosion off your battery terminals. In fact, it’s probably the best way to do so. Bad stuff. Of course, I say this as a guy who is just getting into his fourth pot of coffee today, and who will probably drink a fifth pot before bedtime. Cheers.
